The Throat Center
The Throat is a very important center in Human Design. It is the center for communication, articulating ideas into action. Every center, every channel is formatted to funnel through the Throat. Our words create our outer world; what we declare into the world becomes the blueprint for our lives. So all of the energy in the Human Design Bodygraph is designed to move out into the world through the Throat. As a result, it is important to learn how to listen to what we speak, how to say what we mean, and also how to be heard.
Approximately 78% of the world population is defined, although the strength of the definition will depend on other parts of the chart. If your Throat is Defined, look at your chart; to which Centers is your Defined Throat Center connected?
Root to the Throat: [This is not a direct connection; to see if yours is connected, take a pencil and trace the defined Root channel(s) to the next center continue to trace to the next.] The Root Center is a pressure center–the drive to “do” something is very strong, especially when connected to the Throat. At the same time, the Root has an on/off switch–when it’s turned on, you have an incredibly strong impulse to do and to speak; when it is turned off, you’ll notice that you will have a more difficult time starting things and wanting to talk a lot. How and when the Root decides to turn on depends on your natural body rhythms.
Defined Spleen to the Throat: This connection gives you an innate sense to know when the timing is right to speak. As we said earlier, your connections are so strong that the Throat can be a powerful energy source, so learning to feel this sense of timing will ensure that you are communicating in a manner that is best for you.
Defined G Center to the Throat: You possess the ability to speak from your heart and to truly be yourself. However, it’s a vulnerable connection; your feelings may be hurt pretty easily because people can misunderstand you. Not everyone can be this vulnerable, so don’t waste your time talking to people who can’t hear you–you’re worth more than that!
Defined Emotional Solar Plexus to the Throat: [This is not always a direct route; to see if yours is connected, take a pencil and trace the defined ESP channel(s) to the next center continue to trace to the next defined channel until you reach the Throat.] You tend to speak from your emotions. This can make what you say very powerful, and it is best to communicate important things when your emotions are more neutral.
Defined Sacral to the Throat: [This is not always a direct route; to see if yours is connected, take a pencil and trace the defined Sacral channel(s) to the next center continue to trace to the next defined channel until you reach the Throat.] This is true Manifesting Generator power. You probably like to talk about your work, about what interests you, about your relationships. Speaking words that come from your Sacral response are strong and powerful, and you are able to swiftly move words into form. The center that gives you the strongest energy to speak is the Sacral. This connection gives you the ability to initiate conversations and to be heard. However, it is a strong ability that requires some restraint to be used in its best form. We can use language thoughtlessly and we can share destructively. One of the life lessons for a ManiGen, especially with a direct connection to the Throat, is to cultivate a deep respect for language and a recognition that language holds the template for what we build. When we use language (internal and external) it has to be intentional and deliberate, to create expansion, not contraction.

If your Throat Center is open, you are like 30% of the world population. You have a natural ability to meet the needs of the people you're speaking with through your communication. Openness gives you adaptability and fluidity. Your personal experience of all the different ways that people speak and share information gives you deep wisdom about how to best communicate. This also gives you an innate capacity to change the way you communicate, depending on who you're with.
It may seem at times that you struggle to be heard. For you to share your wisdom with the world, it serves you well to wait for the recognition, that attention. It is the clue that you are in the right place. You are designed to speak the truth at the right time. It takes faith to trust in right timing, but if you wait in silence, you'll be cultivating a deep wisdom. Once you receive recognition, you'll know you are with the right people who can hear you and respond to your knowledge.
The Throat Center is physiologically linked to the Thyroid and Para-thyroid glands, which are directly related to our growth and development. Using your voice according to Human Design is imperative to using your energy naturally and reducing the risk of burnout.
Just remember you possess the ability to speak words of wisdom to people who recognize that within you. Some of the greatest spokespeople have Open Throat Centers, including Oprah Winfrey. Oprah has talked about her struggles with being heard as a child, then problems with being a news anchor, finally find her voice through interviewing others, sensing the right time to ask specific questions.
Not being seen and heard can affect your self-esteem. Is there a self-worth piece that needs to be looked at in order for you to hold yourself until the recognition comes? If you are grappling with low self-esteem, the antidote may be much simpler than it seems! You need to talk a lot to move your energy. Find your best bud or some other person who makes you feel supported; ask them if they can talk with you. You may need to have a concrete conversation about something, or you may just need to talk just to talk. Either way, recognition activates the energy in the chart, which supports your self-esteem.
Speak your truth…
